Sine Qua Non continues its work to empower civil society by bringing it closer to the international mechanisms and systems of international organisations that protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
In this context, SQN has launched a campaign to raise awareness of one of the United Nations mechanisms, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), in order to strengthen civil society’s capacity to monitor States’ respect for human rights.
SQN’s work on the UPR is divided into three areas. First, it raises awareness of the mechanism and explains the technical details with which the reports must comply. Second, it assists in the preparation of the reports and provides the necessary elements for these reports to achieve maximum impact. Finally, once the reports have been submitted, SQN monitors the impact of the report throughout the cycle.
To this end, as we informed, SQN has included on its website a guide with general information on the UPR and another more practical guide aimed at helping civil society to draft reports that comply with the established guidelines.
More recently, SQN has also developed a series of information sessions to provide information about the UPR and to assist in the preparation of reports. These sessions are organised both on specific days and at the request of interested organisations.
With these tools, SQN contributes to increased monitoring of human rights compliance around the world and does so by providing an opportunity for civil society organisations, especially those without a prior history of engagement with international human rights organisations, to exercise a monitoring function on States and to be agents of positive and constructive momentum in strengthening human rights, both in a particular state and, by extension, globally.
