The recommendation represents an important step towards strengthening the organisation’s engagement with the United Nations system and international human rights advocacy.

On 19 May 2025, the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations recommended granting Sine Qua Non Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The recommendation was adopted during the Committee’s resumed session at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Committee on NGOs comprises Member States and is responsible for reviewing applications from civil society organisations seeking consultative status with ECOSOC. Through this process, the Committee assesses whether organisations can make a meaningful contribution to the work of the United Nations.
Special Consultative Status is the main framework through which non-governmental organisations can formally engage with the United Nations. Once approved by ECOSOC, accredited organisations may participate in relevant UN meetings, contribute written statements, organise side events, and engage with international stakeholders and UN mechanisms.
The recommendation recognises Sine Qua Non’s work in promoting human rights, democratic governance, civic participation, conflict transformation, and the rule of law. It also acknowledges the organisation’s commitment to supporting civil society actors and fostering dialogue and democratic solutions to political and social challenges.
Sine Qua Non is also pleased to note that other civil society organisations that it has accompanied and supported throughout the accreditation process were likewise recommended for consultative status during the same session, reflecting the valuable contribution of civil society organisations from diverse regions and fields of expertise.
The recommendation will now be submitted to ECOSOC for final approval.
