Sine Qua Non Participates in the Basel Peace Forum 2025

Jan 20, 2025

The organisation contributed to discussions on minority rights and presented ongoing work on protecting political communities that fall outside existing international frameworks.

Sine Qua Non participated in the 2025 General Assembly of the Coppieters Foundation, bringing together member organisations and partners working on democracy, minority rights, cultural diversity, and peaceful conflict transformation across Europe.

The Assembly provided an opportunity to review ongoing activities, discuss future priorities, and exchange perspectives on current political and social challenges affecting diverse communities throughout Europe. It also served as a platform to strengthen cooperation among organisations committed to democratic participation, human rights, and inclusive governance.

During the meeting, Sine Qua Non presented an initiative to contribute to ongoing discussions on the protection of political communities within the framework of international minority rights standards. The proposal forms part of a broader effort to examine the limitations of existing protection mechanisms and to explore how they might better respond to the needs of communities whose collective identities are not fully recognised within current international frameworks.

The initiative seeks to encourage dialogue on avenues to strengthen existing standards and improve the inclusiveness of international protection mechanisms. As part of this work, the organisation is contributing to research and advocacy efforts focused on political communities that currently fall outside established minority protection frameworks despite possessing distinct cultural, linguistic, historical, or political identities.

Sine Qua Non welcomed the opportunity to exchange views with partner organisations and remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote human rights, democratic participation, cultural diversity, and the peaceful management of political and social conflicts.
